IUD insertion and removal is a relatively short procedure with minimal discomfort. For those who are considering getting an IUD, there are some important things you should know before making your appointment.
Before the insertion procedure, you will first need to make sure that it is safe for you to get an IUD. This means talking with your doctor about any medical conditions you may have, including any current infections or allergies. Your doctor will also need to do a pelvic exam and pap smear before the insertion.
On the day of your appointment, it’s best to wear loose-fitting clothing in order to make the procedure easier for both you and your doctor. You should also empty your bladder prior to the procedure as thiswill make the insertion easier.
During the procedure, your doctor will use a speculum to open up your vagina and then insert the IUD into your uterus. You may experience some cramping during this process as well as some spotting afterwards. Your doctor may give you medication to help with any pain or cramping that you might feel. The whole procedure should take lessthan 10 minutes.
Once the IUD is inserted, you should follow your doctor's instructions for post-procedure care. This includes not having sexual intercourse or inserting any other device into your vagina for at least a week after insertion. You may also experience some light bleeding or cramping after insertion which should start to subside within a few days.
When it comes time to remove the IUD, the process is similar to insertion. Your doctor will perform a pelvic exam and use a speculum to locate the strings of the IUD. They will then use an instrument called a tenaculum to grasp the strings and slowly pull it out. The whole process should take less than 5 minutes but you may experience some cramping during the procedure.
