Understanding Fibroids: What You Should Know

CAUSE:

The cause is poorly understood, though it may occur in women with raised levels of estrogen. Uterine fibroids are rarely cancerous, with as few as 1 in 1000 cases. However, some studies suggest leiomyosarcoma, or cancerous fibroids, are more common than this.

Types:

The location classifies fibroids within the uterus; there are three main types:
● Intramural fibroids: Form inside the muscular wall of the uterus.
● Submucosal fibroids: Grow within the open space of the uterus.
● Subserosal fibroids: The most common type, which grows on the outside of the uterus.

Symptoms:

Some women do not experience any symptoms. However, some may cause unpleasant side effects, including:
● heavy periods, often causing anemia
● pain during menstruation
● lower back or leg pain
● a heavy or full feeling in the lower abdomen
● constipation
● painful intercourse
● more frequent urination

Complications:
Most often, fibroids do not cause complications. However, they can sometimes affect a person's quality of life, especially for women who suffer from heavy periods.

Some women develop recurrent urinary tract infections as a result. At the same time, larger growths can lead to constipation and discomfort in the lower abdomen.

Treatment:

Most often, fibroids won't require treatment and usually shrink or resolve before menopause.
For women with uncomfortable symptoms, their doctor may suggest the following treatments:

● Lifestyle changes: Maintaining a healthy weight through regular exercise and healthy
eating may moderate estrogen levels and reduce fibroids.
● Hysterectomy: In more severe cases, a hysterectomy may be necessary. This
procedure involves partial or total removal of the uterus.
● Surgery: Large fibroids that do not respond to treatment may require surgery.
● Birth control: Hormonal birth control helps regulate the ovulation cycle and may reduce
bleeding while helping with painful periods.
